Beyond IQ. Beyond EQ. The Intelligence That Makes Us Irreplaceably Human.
A Question That Wouldn’t Leave Me
I recently came across Daniel Goleman’s post on adaptability and positive outlook as Emotional Intelligence (EI) competencies for navigating AI - and was inspired to write this.
Goleman’s work on EI has been revolutionary - and his recent explorations of EQ alongside meditation and mindfulness point in a direction that deeply resonates with what I want to share here.
Because in my own lived experience - and in the shared experience of many who have walked this terrain - something essential is still missing from how we understand human intelligence and leadership.
Not as a criticism of EQ. As a natural next step beyond it.
Let me explain what I mean - and why the age of AI makes this urgently necessary.
I want to be clear about what this is and what it isn’t.
This is not theory. Not philosophy. Not something I read in a book. This is my own lived discovery - as an ordinary human being navigating the same world you are.
Engineer. Business Leader. Entrepreneur. Daughter. Sister. Aunt. Parent (to a dog — still counts!). Friend. Seeker.
If I can access and develop this - anyone can. That is precisely the point.
There is another challenge worth naming.
Traditionally, those who have experienced this terrain have largely been the mystics, the wise, the spiritual teachers - speaking in a beautiful, ancient language but often inaccessible to modern minds. Some modern era Masters have crossed this chasm, yet their wisdom can still feel impenetrable to a tech executive or AI researcher on application.
I am a Systems and R&D engineer. A Fortune 200 tech-business leader. An entrepreneur. And a fifteen-year-plus meditation practitioner.
I have lived both worlds — not sequentially but simultaneously. The corporate room and the meditation cushion. The algorithm and the silence.
That dual citizenship is why I am writing this. Not because I have arrived - this is a journey. But because I can perhaps serve as a bridge - translating ancient yet timeless and alive wisdom into a language that connects technologists, business leaders, AI researchers, healers and spiritual seekers alike.
At least that is my hope. 🙏
We Went from IQ to EQ. Something Is Still Missing.
For most of human history, society valued and developed one primary human capacity: intellect. IQ. The analytical, rational, problem-solving mind.
Daniel Goleman’s work on Emotional Intelligence shifted the landscape. He showed that IQ alone was insufficient for human flourishing and effective leadership. Emotions matter. Empathy matters. EQ matters.
This was a profound and needed evolution.
And yet - in my own experience, and in the experience of many leaders I have met and worked with - EQ as currently practiced has three significant limitations.
FIRST: EQ operates largely at the level of managing emotions. Observing, regulating, adapting. Valuable - but still operating primarily from the personal self, the ego. Just a more regulated, aware version of it.
Ego serves a purpose - like a trellis supporting a young tree. But if the tree clings to the trellis forever, it cannot grow into what it is meant to be. It cannot develop the roots needed to flourish. The same is true for humans.
SECOND: EQ competencies can be learned and performed without a genuine inner shift. A leader can develop empathy, adaptability, positive outlook - and still make decisions from power-seeking, fragmented consciousness. The skills improve. The source remains the same.
As I reflected recently in a conversation about leadership and decision-making:
Even the best decision frameworks - asking ‘who benefits?’ - ultimately flow through the inner state of the leader using them. A leader rooted in power-seeking will still answer in their own interest.
THIRD: EQ, by design, addresses the emotional and social dimensions of human experience. And it does this well. But there is a deeper layer - the spirit dimension - that lies beyond emotion management entirely. This is not a limitation of EQ so much as an invitation to go further.
Living Presence.
Let me describe what I mean.
Stay With Me for a Moment.
When you look at a human being, on the surface lies the body. Beneath that is the breath - vital energy. Without breath, the body is a corpse.
Go even deeper: you can watch your thoughts like clouds floating in the sky.
Even deeper: you can watch your emotions - and with deepening practice start to catch anger, or any emotion, just when it sparks and way before it engulfs you in its fire.
Consciousness is the witnessing awareness that allows you to observe your body, breath, thoughts and emotions.
Try it now.
Be a witness to your body, breath, thoughts and emotions in this moment.
If you can witness them, a question naturally arises: If you are more than your body, breath, thoughts and emotions - who are you?
This is THE question - ‘Who Am I?’ - that has been the seeker’s quest always. Across every wisdom tradition. Across every major religion. In every culture. In every age.
Through practices like meditation, you can rest in this witnessing awareness for longer periods. As the body relaxes, breath steadies, emotions and mind activity settle, you sink deeper into Consciousness - into Living Presence.
Deeply relaxing. Rejuvenating. Alive Silence. Existential Source. And profoundly more.
This is not mystical abstraction. This is direct experience - available to everyone willing to explore. No belief required. Only curiosity and willingness to try.
The Awakened Wise across ages have spoken of the human journey being from unconsciousness toward consciousness.
Universal Consciousness is like an ocean. Individual Consciousness - our unique expression and essence - is like a wave. Each of us is both the wave and the potential to be the ocean. A seed born to grow into a deeply rooted tree touching the skies. That is the destiny and majesty of every embodied human being.
While Enlightenment may seem too aspirational or out of reach for most of us, the beauty is that every step forward on this journey matters and reveals how much nourishment, joy, rootedness and connection we are capable of.
Through this direct experience, growing deeper with practice, we know that:
Humans are more than the mind. We have a heart. We have a spirit. Machines don’t.
We are embodied. Machines are not.
This embodied human experience - of consciousness, of Living Presence - is irreducibly, irreplaceably human. No AI can replicate it. No algorithm can simulate it.
And here is the most important implication for our current moment:
How can humans meaningfully counter growing claims of AI consciousness, self-realization, even God-like status — if they themselves have not experienced consciousness?
Some domains must remain irreducibly human. This is clearly one of them. An absolute redline.
The Fish in the Ocean Is Thirsty
Quote by Kabir, a 15th century Mystic:
“The Fish is the Ocean is Thirsty”
If Living Presence is always available, pulsating within and around us, why have more humans not experienced it? Or if they have, why have they not spoken widely about it?
Other than those few moments - those flashes of insight, intuition, knowing - when we are stunned into silence. A sudden loss. A beautiful sunrise. Deep love. When the mind stops and something else takes over. We know those moments and their magical splendor.
Kabir, the renowned 15th century Mystic from India, captured this paradox:
“The Fish in the Ocean is Thirsty.”
Referring to humans surrounded by Universal Consciousness and yet disconnected from it.
Why?
Intellect: The Mansion’s Porch
Society through the ages has valued human intellect for productivity - building economic and other systems around it. The majority have lived primarily from the minds. Like living on a mansion’s porch, never entering the house itself.
Perpetually thinking. Analyzing. Problem-solving. Focused on productivity and efficiency. The result? Enormous technological progress and riches on the outside - with overloaded, overstressed minds expressing as suffering, disconnection and misery within.
The Blocked Heart
Our heart centers have been undervalued and underdeveloped. Yet the heart is the seat of emotions, creativity, courage, vitality: all that makes us feel truly alive.
We experience love, beauty, anger, grief through our hearts - experiences completely real yet impossible to fully dissect in labs. But we are taught to judge and repress ‘negative’ emotions - pain, anger, sadness, instead of releasing them in safe ways. This blocks the heart’s flow.
Emotions are energy. Instead of leaving them stuck or repressed, they can be released or transformed, freeing up tremendous vitality.
It is our artists, poets and creatives who give us glimpses of the magic possible with flowing, open hearts.
The Yet Unknown Spirit Center
The human spirit center is the least known and developed. The seat of silence, deep relaxation, joy, nourishment, intuition, presence, it is the bridge to Universal Consciousness.
It was easier to access in times when hearts were more open and minds less crowded.
The Channel Is Closed
With minds stressed, hearts not flowing, and spirit center unknown or undeveloped, the channel itself is closed.
Mind. Heart. Spirit. Fragmented. Disconnected. Not integrated.
Any surprise, then, why experiencing Living Presence has been so challenging? Now we can understand why the Fish in the Ocean is thirsty.
It need not be this way. We can stay thirsty. Or we can be curious, open ourselves, and drink. No amount of belief in either direction will quench us. Only the experience will.
Like a Hollow Bamboo - Opening the Channel
Like a hollow bamboo, we can create spaciousness within for the life pulsating all around us to flow through and rejuvenate us.
Like an explorer, we can venture into an inner terrain that the Wise Sages have always known about and given tools and methods to navigate.
The spaciousness inside is what allows life to flow through freely. This is the embodied human channel: mind, heart and spirit centers. When clear and open, Living Presence flows through us like breath through a bamboo flute - creating wondrous harmonies.
When blocked, life force diminishes and we become disconnected islands locked within our individual egos.
Hollow Bamboos connecting with Living Presence.
A metaphor for Our Work. Presence-powered leaders and Innovators rooted in Integrated Intelligence. Creating AI Solutions that Serve Life.
The wisdom traditions have always known this: in yoga the central energy channel, in Taoism the flow of Chi, in Sufism the open heart as vessel for Divine Presence, in Buddhism clearing the channel through meditation and compassion, in Christian mysticism through prayer and contemplation. Different traditions. Same insight.
Hollow-Bamboo Innovations takes its name from this ancient wisdom and connects it to AI advancement and innovation.
And here is what is significant: it is not a one-way street.
The channel opens from BOTH directions:
Meditation and contemplative practices calm the mind and open the spirit center - Living Presence flows through, nourishing us, deeply relaxing us, grounding us
Inner work focused on the heart center - through meditative practices, modern therapeutic methods, somatic work - releases blocked emotions, opening tremendous vitality and sensitivity
Living Presence and an open heart, work together. Every step forward matters. This is a journey not a focus on destination.
One Root. Two Crises.
This fragmentation - mind-only, ego-based, disconnected from heart and spirit - is not just an individual problem.
I have come to see it as the foundational root cause of what I call the Twin Crises of the AI Age.
The Human Crisis
As AI displaces human intellect - the very capacity society has valued and built identity around - profound questions arise:
What is a human being beyond their intellect? What gives us dignity and value especially in an automated age?
If we have lived only from our minds - and machines now do what minds do - the existential crisis is real and deep. Questions of human dignity, worth and identity that society has never had to face so directly are now unavoidable.
Researchers like Jonathan Haidt have documented how digital technology is already reshaping human development and connection. AI accelerates this at an unprecedented scale.
Compounding this, billions risk being excluded from AI’s benefits, making democratization of AI not just ethical but essential for global stability.
The AI Crisis
AI systems are ultimately optimized for what humans value and prioritize. If those values emerge from ego-driven, fragmented consciousness - power-seeking, manipulation, self-interest - AI mirrors and amplifies exactly that.
We are already seeing this:
AI identifying targets in active warfare in near-real-time
Autonomous systems accelerating faster than governance
Power concentrating in fewer and fewer hands
Claims of AI consciousness, self-realization, even God-like status
External controls - regulations, ethics boards, safety protocols - are needed and essential. Yet they address symptoms, not causes. As long as consciousness remains ego-driven and fragmented, competitive pressure will override safety concerns, alignment will reflect misaligned values, and power-seeking will find workarounds.
You cannot regulate away what comes from within.
Both crises - human and AI - share one root cause:
Intellect-only, ego-based, fragmented consciousness.
We are at a crossroads as a human race. Do we go backwards, sideways or forward?
My answer: we go forward. Developing Integrated Intelligence℠ - mind-heart-spirit combined - on the path to becoming more fully human and accessing our full capacities.
The Invitation Hidden in the Crisis
Here is the profound opportunity hidden within this moment:
As AI displaces human intellect, humans can take respite from productivity orientation - with more time and energy to develop their untapped capacities of heart and spirit.
This isn’t just an opportunity. It is an urgency. As AI takes on what minds do, we are called to discover what only hearts and spirit can do. What makes us uniquely and irreplaceably human.
What Is Integrated Intelligence℠?
Not intellect alone (IQ). Not emotional management alone (EQ). But mind, heart and spirit — growing and integrating as a living whole.
The witnessing awareness that observes body, breath, thoughts and emotions — clarity and rootedness without reactivity
A mind tapped into for its wonderful capabilities when needed - strategic thinking, critical analysis and more - but no longer the only resource deployed for every situation
The open heart that feels, creates and connects — empathy with vitality, creativity and innovation infused by Living Presence
The spirit center able to connect and rest in Living Presence — the source of joy, intuition, reverence and wisdom
Integrated Intelligence can be best described as alertness with awareness. Accessing spontaneous, fresh insights. The ability to respond creatively to each moment, not from past data or future projections.
Ethics and reverence for life flow naturally from this state. Not forced from outside. Not beliefs we must adhere to until self-interest makes us sidestep them.
Integrated Intelligence is not a skill set to be learned. It is learning and developing a state of being - accessed through direct experience, developed through practice and applied to everyday living, relationships, work and leadership.
What This Makes Possible
HUMANS FLOURISH, not just survive. They develop largely untapped capacities of heart and spirit that AI cannot replace. They move toward meaning, connection and self-actualization. They flourish beyond productivity metrics, with a deep knowing of human dignity, and help to steer AI’s trajectory with wisdom. They innovate and create Life and Work systems that support thriving
AI SERVES LIFE. Leaders create from Integrated Intelligence, with Presence-Powered, not ego-powered goals. Technology is designed for collective flourishing. Governance is grounded in wisdom.
The Good News: Methods Exist
Proven methods exist and they work. These aren’t beliefs or philosophies. They are empirical, experience-based techniques.
The invitation is to approach this as a scientist of the inner. An explorer of your own consciousness. No belief required. Only direct experience. Experiment. Taste. Know.
It is surprisingly simple, yet profoundly transformative. Not forced. Not rushed. A gentle, continuous deepening into what has always been here. The process meets you where you are - not demanding perfection but inviting wholeness.
Modern Awakened Masters and Spiritual teachers - Krishnamurti, Osho, Gurdjieff, Ramana Maharshi, Dalai Lama, Sadhguru, Eckhart Tolle and others - have transmitted this timeless wisdom in ways modern humans can comprehend and practice.
This is not ancient theory in books. This is living wisdom, available right now, in this moment, through direct embodied experience.
Once you taste it, you become a witness to the timeless wisdom foundational to all major religions of the world - principles that Krishna, Christ, Buddha, and so many Enlightened Mystics, Sages and Wisdom Keepers have spoken of through the ages.
It is also worth highlighting here that United Nations declared December 21 as World Meditation Day in 2024 - a signal that this shift is moving from the margins to the mainstream.
This transformation - from mind-only to mind-heart-spirit integrated - is no longer optional. It is essential. It is a survival necessity.
The Mansion Has Always Been Open
Many people have already tasted this.
A moment of inexplicable peace. A flash of pure clarity. A sense of something vast and loving underlying ordinary experience.
Many meditators and contemplative practitioners know this experience.
Most don’t speak of it - fearing no one will believe them. Or that they will be dismissed as mystical or unscientific.
And many have kept them largely in separate worlds.
Meditating in the morning. Competing from ego by afternoon.
We have compartmentalized for so long - inner life here, professional life there - as two separate worlds that must never meet.
I know this tension. I have lived it. And I know many of you have too, searching in your own ways at different points on the journey. Looking externally - money, recognition, achievement - and finding that fulfillment still eludes us. Wondering what the purpose is. Why we are here.
What makes this moment even more poignant is the disruption being caused by AI. The questions are no longer just personal. They are existential. They are civilizational.
As AI displaces human intellect - the very basis of professional identity for most people - the questions that were once ‘personal’ or ‘spiritual’ are now urgent and professional:
Who am I beyond my productivity?
What do I truly value?
What does it mean to lead from wisdom rather than from fear or ego?
These questions can no longer wait for the weekend. They belong in every boardroom, every lab, every governance conversation.
And the stakes are too high to sit on the sidelines.
AI is being built right now. Governance frameworks are being written. The future is being decided. This is not a spiritual matter anymore. It is an existential one.
I understand the fear that holds people from speaking about this.
And I am choosing to speak anyway.
Because I am not asking you to believe. I am inviting you to be curious. To experiment. To try.
Direct experience needs no belief. It speaks for itself.
With even just a taste, you will be inspired and know firsthand that:
Consciousness is a uniquely embodied human experience - not of AI
Self-realization is uniquely human - not of AI
Living Presence is the birthright of every human being - not of any machine
And you will discover something else - something the Mystics have always known:
The mansion has always been open.
The ocean has always been here.
The fish never needed to be thirsty.
We were just living on the porch.
The invitation now, in this moment of AI acceleration, is to come inside. To discover the full depth of what it means to be human. To develop what AI cannot replicate.
Not just to survive the age of AI. To flourish in it. And to steer it, from wisdom, not ego.
At Hollow-Bamboo Innovations, we are building the bridge - between inner transformation and outer innovation, between ancient and alive wisdom and AI, between who we have been and who we are called to become.
This is what we call Integrated-Intelligence℠ - the natural evolution beyond IQ and EQ.
Mind. Heart. Spirit. Growing together. As a living whole.
Irreplaceably human. Available to all.
We welcome all who feel the call.
